Letter to Taoiseach: Extend Waiver to Undocumented Irish
A letter is being sent to An Taoiseach Enda Kenny on behalf of Donegal County Council to try and extend the waiver system to the undocumented Irish in America.
It follows a conference in Donegal Town earlier this month, hosted by former Bundoran Town Councillor Michael McMahon to detail the situation facing the over 50,000 Irish people in the US who risk a ten year ban if they decide to come home.
Visa waivers have been used by undocumented Mexican citizens to return to Mexico and pick up their legal documentation, at the U.S. consular offices and return to work in the U.S. legally, without any ban being imposed.
It’s hoped that the Taoiseach will ask the US Ambassador to Ireland if the same opportunity could be extended to Irish citizens.
Independent Councillor Niamh Kennedy, who raised the motion at the most recent council meeting, says that she felt inspired to do so by the work of activist Michael McMahon:
