Tánaiste Joins Irish Lobby Groups in Washington DC to Push for Immigration Reform
Breandán G. Magee | Chicago Irish Immigrant Support:
The Tánasite and Minister for Foreign Affairs Eamon Gilmore TD joined the Chicago Celts for Immigration Reform, the Irish Lobby for Immigrant Reform, the Irish Apostolate USA and the Ancient Order of Hibernians in Washington DC last week to push for immigration reform. The Tánaiste is using his last few weeks in office to focus on the 50,000 undocumented Irish living in the USA. The Irish groups were on the Hill all week lobbying Republicans on the issue despite a major upset in the Republican leadership with the primary loss of chief whip Eric Cantor (R-VA). Kevin McCarthy has been elected as the new majority house whip and he has a small window of opportunity to put immigration on the agenda before the August recess.
